D&S Pump Supply and Goulds Water Technology Keep Quaker Hill Country Club in the Green

In the heart of New York’s Hudson Valley sits the scenic Quaker Hill Country Club, voted a “Top 25 Nine-Hole Course in America” by GolfWorld Magazine. Founded by adventurer, traveler, and broadcaster Lowell Thomas in 1940, the nine-hole golf course was created by famed designer Robert Trent Jones. One of Quaker Hill’s most famous guests was baseball great Babe Ruth who was rumored to have traded his baseball bat for golf clubs after he retired from baseball.

Over time, the irrigation, pressure boosting and flow control systems became problematic and the grounds crew was only able to water one green or fairway at a time The grounds crew was also concerned about the multi-stage pump running dry and failing. The possibility of a pump failure forced the staff to monitor the pump continuously while in operation to ensure they shut it down before it ran dry. This was a very inefficient process and poor use of staff resources.

Gary Lattrell, superintendent of Quaker Hill Country Club, realized the course needed a better solution.  When the pump failure finally occurred, he knew just who to call and contacted Alan Dretel, president of D&S Pump and Supply Company in Brewster, New York for a solution.

Centrifugal booster pump

D&S was contacted on a Wednesday and within a few days a new system was in place. A Goulds Water Technology high pressure centrifugal booster pump and an AquavarTM SPD variable speed pump controller were installed resulting minimal down time to the irrigation system and zero down time to the Quaker Hill guests.

With the low water protection of the SPD, the control will shut down the pump when running low on water to protect the booster pump from a dry run.  The new SPD also allows more than one green or fairway to be watered as long as the water is in supply. With the upgrade to variable speed, the drive controls the output of the pump to only use the power consumption necessary to maintain the set pressure, thus reducing energy use and saving money.
