Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania, is a high-quality health care facility that provides services to over 2 million residents on a yearly basis. As plumbing maintenance manager at Geisinger Medical Center, Jim Reichard knows what it takes to maintain a facility with such high standards. However, he was recently challenged with the need for significant pump upgrades. The three existing hot water circulator pumps in the center’s boiler room had been installed several years ago and needed to be replaced to maintain an efficient system. Moreover, the pumps were suspended 8 feet from the floor, making it incredibly difficult to change the leaking shaft seals when maintenance was needed.
To help solve these challenges, Reichard reached out to Orchard Pump, a distributor of on-site water, wastewater and water treatment equipment products including Goulds Water Technology. Orchard Pump assessed the situation and recommended that Geisinger install Goulds Water Technology e-SVTM stainless steel multi-stage pumps. The recommendation was based on the pumps’ innovative hydraulic design and highly efficient motor that significantly lowers lifecycle costs and increases energy savings. Orchard Pump also suggested installing the new pumps at floor level for easy service and safe maintenance.
“The e-SV is one of the most energy-efficient pumps in its class and Goulds Water Technology products meet the standards we require. The hospital will greatly benefit from the customer service, lower operational and lifecycle costs,” said Reichard.
After selecting the pumps, the maintenance staff at Geisinger Medical Center began redirecting piping and electric and poured a concrete pad so the pumps could be installed at floor level. The three e-SVs, which are designed to meet 35 GPM at 60’ TDH and 180°F, are enhanced by the hydraulic design for superior NPSHR levels and by eliminating the need to remove the motor, allowing for significantly reduced maintenance. The mechanical seal is also replaceable without the need for pump disassembly, and the ‘O’ ring seat is designed to allow easy disassembly of the outer sleeve.
Thanks to Bill Long and Randy Cracknell of Xylem as well as Orchard Pump’s Tom Robsock, who assisted with the selection and sizing process, three e-SV multistage pumps are now keeping hospital patients and staff comfortable year-round.
